palermoProduction details:
“Palermo Shooting” is Wim Wenders’ latest feature film.
German rock star Campino plays the highly successful photographer Finn, whose life goes off the rails. He ends up coming face to face with Death (personified by Dennis Hopper, a cinematic reunion with Wenders 30 years after “The American Friend”) before finally encountering love. (The female lead is played by Italian actress Giovanna Mezzogiorno.)
The film starts in Wenders’ home town of Düsseldorf. A photo shoot takes Finn away to Palermo.
Cinematographer Franz Lustig used S-35 mm for Düsseldorf, where everything looks stylish and cool, and S-16 mm handheld for Palermo, with a much warmer and direct feeling, achieving two very different looks.
The DI was done at Pictorion Das Werk in Berlin, Düsseldorf and Munich. 2K Scanning on Imagica Scanners and S-16 on Spirit Datacine. The Color Grading was done by Colorist Philipp Orgassa at Pictorion Das Werk Berlin. He graded the film on a RESOLVE RT System on a Barco DP90P Projector.
Wenders and Lustig spent a lot of time in the Resolve theatre enjoying the possibilities the system gave them. "The army of ants" crawling over the image was Wim's favourite RESOLVE feature. (That is what he called the little tracking crosses that automatically analyze the movement of the tracking target.)
“Palermo Shooting” had almost 200 VFX shots, the most ambitious ones in the end, when Finn meets Death (Dennis Hopper). Using external mattes made grading layers of the composites easy.
Editing and Grading schedule was very tight, running against the deadline of the Cannes Film Festival, where Palermo Shooting had its world premiere. RESOLVE's Color Trace and non-linear editing functionality made it easy to apply gradings to new edls coming in from the editing room.
