VFX production for the film "Die Frau des Anarchisten" |
PICTORION das werk is proud to have been selected as the visual effects producer of the “Die Frau des Anarchisten“. The film by Marie Noelle and Peter Sehr tells the story of Marie Noelles grandmother in times of the Spanish Civil War.
The film was shot in 35mm film in Germany, Spain and France, where on the set the crew and cast were communicating in 5 different languages.
Sebastian Weidner, 3D artist at PICTORION das werk, set supervisor accompanied the production at several locations: Madrid, Barcelona and Annonay (France).
For one shot he was privileged to meet the legendary miniature model legend, Emilio Ruiz del Rio who has been involved in countless top class films since the fifties. For “Die Frau des Anarchisten” he built his last model, a house facade, ruined by a bomb attack. The effect is so unbelievable you should take a closer look at the pictures. Unfortunately Emilio died of cancer just after the shooting.
But there is a lot more to the VFX work of PICTORION das werk: The subsequent adaptation comprised a total of 70 effect settings, each requiring precise planning, preparation and execution. To do this, an in-house produced “motion picture workflow” developed by Joerg Bruemmer, head of compositing at PICTORION das werk and his team was used... Read more... |

HILDE "VISUAL EFFECTS" |
We’re glad to present to you some VFX shots of our latest feature film project “Hilde”, which you can find in the category “VFX BREAKDOWNS”. You can find a selection of different set extensions like the destroyed Berlin in the German forties, as well as Hollywood at that time. We recreated film studios and concert halls digitally, by means of a.o. crowd duplication. Furthermore, we let 3D planes take off in a real shot environment. You can look at the VFX shots interactively via the "before and after" slider.

HILDE |

After successfully finishing the shoot of the new Egoli Tossel (directed by Kai Wessel) movie 'Hilde' in Magdeburg and Berlin, the production focus was shifting towards postproduction. PICTORION Ruhrsound was responsible for the sound recordings and PICTORION das werk for all VFX shots and the DI.
After a long search for financers, the movie could finally be shot. It is reflecting Hildgard Knef's life in the years between 1944 and 1966. Heike Makatsch took Knef’s part in the 10 Mio Euros budget movie. To master the challenge of portraying an icon like Hildegard Knef, Makatsch took singing lessons for more then one year in order to be able to authentically sing all the songs. The movie which is strongly based on the bestseller ‘The gift horse’ by Knef herself was mainly shot in Magdeburg, although the story mostly takes place in Berlin. Located in the center of Berlin, it became difficult to shoot historically correct locations 'Prenzlauer Berg' and 'Mitte'. Kai Wessel: „In Magdeburg, things still look more like a war scenario“. Nevertheless, the production spent three weeks in Berlin, shooting several parts of the movie in famous locations like Schillertheater, Philharmonie and the shut down airport Tempelhof.
The DI for 'Hilde' was spread over the PICTORION das werk group. Imagica Scanners were used to scan the whole project in a 2K resolution. Our grading artist for 'Hilde' Moritz Peters was using a RESOLVE RT System with a Barco DP90P Projector. The movie 'Hilde' had more than 40 VFX shots (3D Airplanes, set extensions, crowd duplications, matte paintings, destroyed Berlin,...) which were all successfully created by PICTORION das werk.

Release „Love Comes Lately" |
Release Date Germany: 09. April 2009 Production details: In 2007 we worked on the entire Digital Intermediate and several visual effects of the feature film project “Love comes lately”. Finally we can announce the German premiere on April 9th, with the German title „Bis später, Max!“. The original footage was a mix of 16mm Negative and 35mm Intermed Positive. The scanning was made to HD Cam SR on the Cinel DSX, the final grading on the DaVinci 2K color correction sytem, and then it was recorderded on an Arri Laser.
Description: Though approaching his eighties, Max Kohn shows no signs of slowing down. He pursues his love life both real and imagined with youthful vigor, thereby risking his relationship to Reisel, the woman he loves but neglects. As the line between Max and his stories begin to blur, he plays out the eternal narrative of desire against the clatter of typewriter keys. Based on short stories by Nobel Prize-winning author Isaac Bashevis Singer, Love Comes Lately is a film about real and imagined longings, the never-ending dream of love and the power of fiction

59. Berlinale |
As a longterm official partner, we are eminently glad, that, within this year’s festival, several contributions are being shown, on which PICTORION das werk has done a significant part of image editing: The expected portrait of the big post-war star Hildegard Knef “Hilde” by the Director Kai Wessel has its world premiere on 13 February 2009 within the sequence of Berlinale Special. Egoli Tossel instructed PICTORION das werk with Visual Effects (VFX) and the Digital Intermediate (DI). Also within the Berlinale Special, the latest film “Adam Resurrected” by Paul Schrader will be shown. The German/Israeli/American co-production, which made the holocaust a subject of discussion by describing the traumas of the survicors, will be premiéred in Germany on 19 February 2009. Here again, PICTORION das werk has taken over the complete DI. The sequence Panorama shows the concert documentation “Von Wegen” by Uli Schüppel, which deal with the colliding new buildings from 1989. PICTORION das werk accomplished the DI and the Mastering under a very tight timing.

RED Workshop |
Building on the success of the 3D character workshop we joined forces with Pille, a cologne based equipment rental service, and devised a road show to demonstrate the RED camera. A total of 250 film and advertising worker attended the workshop and were told about the RED specific workflow with comprehensible examples.
RED's camera seems to be the first serious and affordable alternative to film available on the market. In the past, digital recordings always had certain disadvantages as compared to analog recordings. Our workshop is supposed to give our clients a chance to see the camera and it's operating modes first-hand as well as to point out strengths and weaknesses within an existing workflow.
Attending the workshop should enable anyone to identify the circumstances that would allow for the RED camera to be used as an alternative to film or when to stick to good old celluloid.
We would like to thank all 250 participants for their enthusiasm and their lively interest in all 15 slots.

How to create a character - 3D Character Workshop |

Between March and September all PICTORION das werk sites hosted „3D character workshops“ for our clients. PICTORION Magma's Peter Bohl, as well as Rolf Mütze and Christian Laskawi (both members of our 3D department) gave an entertaining and in-depth presentation. Practical examples illustrated character animation basics while the necessary steps to create the final movie were being explained. The main character of “Noah is gone”, a feature film currently in production at PICTORION Magma, served to exemplify the required procedures - spanning from the drawing board to 3D modelling and finally the actual animation. The second half of the presentation consisted of Rolf and Christian going into the details of character animation in advertising. Current project's making-of featurettes helped in conveying client-relevant information related to planning, timing and complexity of 3D animation projects. Many members of the audience actively participated by asking questions and were rewarded with a production guide to aid them during their daily routines. |

Barefoot Films & Pictorion das werk a successfull team |
After the first collaboration with Til Schweiger and Tom Zickler for their thriller „One Way“, the Dynamic Duo decided once more, on their new film „KEINOHRHASEN“, to trust PICTORION das werk with the digital-post production.
Along with the most recent Box-office hit, film-producer, director and actor Til Schweiger has brought to date over three million movie-goers to German cinemas. The new Hit film with Til Schweiger and Nora Tschirner in the leading roles, is an emotionally honest and funny „romantic-comedy“. The Press agrees that this film, with its witty dialogue and grandiose punch-lines, is a highlight of its Genre.
The film was shot from April to May of 2007 in Berlin and already a half year later the post-production work was finished and their film was lasered onto 35mm film. It was very important to Til Schweiger to do the cutting of the film, using an already color-corrected version of the film material. For that reason the „look“ of the film was already determined and put into practice for the daily rushes. The cutting of the film was happening parallel to the shooting of the film, and already one month after the film was „wrapped“, we had already begun working on several of the Visual FX scenes.
